The 40 yard container in Scranton
The 40 yard is our largest dumpster, built for maximum capacity and fewer hauls. Large-scale construction or demolition, warehouse, office or industrial cleanouts, commercial renovations and roofing jobs, full-home remodels and large property or community cleanups - that is where it lives. It holds about 40 cubic yards, roughly twelve pickup truck loads or 230 to 250 standard 33-gallon trash bags.
Bulky and mixed debris is what justifies the 40: drywall, framing, fixtures, wood, siding and windows, pallets, packaging and furniture on larger projects. The footprint is the same 22 by 7.5 feet as a 20 or 30, but at eight feet tall it is usually loaded by a crew - contractors on large jobs and businesses clearing out a building.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement or a pad, not grass), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines
Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs
Big jobs come with local paperwork. In Archbald, a contractor has to show a receipt for a dumpster and a written disposal plan before the Borough issues a building permit, and the dumpster has to be clearly marked and placed so it is no hazard to people or traffic (§ 408-21), and every temporary dumpster there needs a Borough permit (§ 325-3L), so we check the Borough's rules before booking.
Demolition comes with state rules too. Pennsylvania's DEP enforces the federal asbestos NESHAP rules, and when a project falls under them "a minimum ten-working-day notification of the project is required to be made to DEP"; DEP adds that it "does not regulate the removal of ACM from private residences unless the residence is an apartment with five or more units". The Department of Labor and Industry separately requires "at least a five-day notification of any project abating friable asbestos material of more than 3 square or 3 linear feet", done by a certified contractor. Asbestos never goes in our roll-offs. On the road, Pennsylvania law says every load of loose waste or rubbish travels "in a vehicle with four solid sides and with a cover or top of a type to prevent any of the load from escaping", and "The load shall be no higher than the solid sides of the vehicle" (75 Pa.C.S. § 4903(c.1)).
Access and placement for a 40 yard
The truck needs about 60 feet of clear space, at least 25 feet of overhead clearance and flat, stable ground such as a paved lot or a pad. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it, and our drivers place it carefully even on tight or busy sites. A 40 in a public way is a different question. Pennsylvania's State Highway Law says no one may "open the surface of or occupy a State highway without a permit" (§ 420(b)(2)), and PennDOT handles anything within state highway right-of-way through its highway occupancy permits, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-81, I-476, US-6, US-11, PA-307, PA-347 or any other state route. On a Scranton street, City Code § 400-17 requires a City permit for any roll-off placed on a street or highway; the container needs a flashing light and proper reflectors, and it may stay in the right-of-way for one day only unless the permit holder hires an off-duty police officer to keep traffic moving safely. So the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we arrange the City's street permit or check the rules with you before booking. Outside Scranton, Carbondale's permit FAQ says a dumpster needs a City permit "if the dumpster is placed in the road" and that "If the dumpster is on your property, you are not required to have a permit"; Clarks Summit needs a Borough permit for a dumpster in the street, good for two weeks and renewable to six weeks in all, with reflective tape and two-inch lumber under it (Ord. 2015-02 § 104); and Jermyn needs a Borough permit and a bond for a roll-off on a paved Borough road, with a protective barrier under it (Ord. 2 of 1992). Elsewhere we found no posted street-permit rule for a dumpster, which is not proof there is none, so we check with the borough office before a street placement. Each town page says what that place asks for.
Suitability
Is the 40 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 40 yard for
- Large construction and demolition
- Commercial renovations and roofing jobs
- Warehouse, office and industrial cleanouts
- Full-home remodels
- Large property and community cleanups
Pick a different size for
- Heavy-only loads - concrete, dirt and brick go in a 10 or 15
- Small jobs (you would pay for unused space)
- Sites without truck access or overhead clearance
- Asbestos, oil, paint, fuel or medical waste

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Not covered here? Call (570) 354-0618 and ask.
Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?
Its footprint is the same as a 20 or 30 - about 22 by 7.5 feet - so it can go on some residential properties, but at eight feet tall it is a lot of box for a house. For most homes a 30, or a 20 with swaps, is the better fit. Ask and we will say which.
How do you load a 40 yard?
Usually with a crew. The walls are about eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow. Distribute debris evenly throughout the container and keep waste below the top edge.
Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?
Not as the load. Typically 5 to 6 tons is included, and concrete, soil or brick reach that at a fraction of the volume. For heavy debris we recommend a 10 or 15 yard, or multiple loads.
Do you offer swaps on long jobs?
Yes. For contractors and ongoing projects we offer scheduled service, swap-outs and flexible arrangements. Tell us the scope and how long the job runs and we quote the whole job.
