The 10 yard container in Scranton

The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one pile of heavy debris. At about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide it is the smallest container we run, so it suits tight spaces - a narrow drive in South Side, the back of a lot in West Scranton, a short driveway in Dunmore or Taylor. It holds about 10 cubic yards, roughly three pickup truck loads or 50 to 70 standard 33-gallon trash bags.

It is also the size for dense material. Concrete, brick, asphalt, stone, tile and dirt go in a 10 or a 15 rather than a big box, because weight runs out long before space does. The included weight on a 10 is about 1 to 2 tons; tell us what you are loading when you book and we help you plan it so it stays within the limit.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines

Small remodels, cleanouts and heavy debris

A small kitchen or bathroom remodel - tile, vanity, cabinets, a bit of drywall - sits in a 10 yard. So does a garage or single-room cleanout, a patio of broken concrete, a load of dirt from a small dig or the debris from a small roof. The 3.5-foot sides make it easy to load from the ground.

It suits the area because the public options are built for household trash. The public options are built for household trash, not a job's debris. Scranton's DPW says it picks up household garbage first and larger items "if we have room in the truck", and we found no City drop-off for construction or bulk waste. Dunmore's DPW does not pick up construction debris and its 2026 calendar says clean-outs will not be accepted; Old Forge's curbside service does not take construction material; Dickson City's schedule says no construction materials, and its spring cleanup is one pickup per house; and Mayfield's garbage contract leaves out construction and demolition waste. Anything more than a few curbside bags of remodel debris is what a 10 on the driveway is for.

The weight line on a 10 yard

The included weight on a 10 yard is about 1 to 2 tons, and your quote states it. Household junk rarely gets close. A 10 filled with concrete, dirt or shingles can, so spread heavy material evenly and tell us it is coming. Keep debris below the top rim - an overfilled dumpster cannot be transported safely and may need adjusting before pickup. If a load goes over the included weight, the extra weight is billed at a clear rate set before delivery. The flat rate covers delivery and pickup, disposal within the weight limit and a standard rental period of up to 7 days. On the road, Pennsylvania law says every load of loose waste or rubbish travels "in a vehicle with four solid sides and with a cover or top of a type to prevent any of the load from escaping", and "The load shall be no higher than the solid sides of the vehicle" (75 Pa.C.S. § 4903(c.1)).

Suitability

Is the 10 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 10 yard for

  • Small kitchen and bathroom remodels
  • Garage and single-room cleanouts
  • Concrete, brick, asphalt, tile and dirt
  • Roofing debris from a small roof
  • Small yard cleanups and tree trimmings

Pick a different size for

  • A whole-home cleanout - that is a 20 or 30
  • Big, bulky loads of furniture (you run out of room first)
  • Paint, fuel, oil or hazardous liquids
  • Tires, batteries, pressurized tanks, asbestos or appliances containing refrigerants

Placing a 10 yard container in Scranton

It needs a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines. The driveway comes first. On a Scranton street, City Code § 400-17 requires a City permit for any roll-off placed on a street or highway; the container needs a flashing light and proper reflectors, and it may stay in the right-of-way for one day only unless the permit holder hires an off-duty police officer to keep traffic moving safely. So the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we arrange the City's street permit or check the rules with you before booking. In Archbald and Jermyn every temporary dumpster needs a Borough permit, even on private property, so we check the Borough's rules before booking. Outside Scranton, Carbondale's permit FAQ says a dumpster needs a City permit "if the dumpster is placed in the road" and that "If the dumpster is on your property, you are not required to have a permit"; Clarks Summit needs a Borough permit for a dumpster in the street, good for two weeks and renewable to six weeks in all, with reflective tape and two-inch lumber under it (Ord. 2015-02 § 104); and Jermyn needs a Borough permit and a bond for a roll-off on a paved Borough road, with a protective barrier under it (Ord. 2 of 1992). Elsewhere we found no posted street-permit rule for a dumpster, which is not proof there is none, so we check with the borough office before a street placement. Pennsylvania's State Highway Law says no one may "open the surface of or occupy a State highway without a permit" (§ 420(b)(2)), and PennDOT handles anything within state highway right-of-way through its highway occupancy permits, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-81, I-476, US-6, US-11, PA-307, PA-347 or any other state route. For added protection, you can put plywood or boards under the wheels. Each town page covers its own rules.

10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Not covered here? Call (570) 354-0618 and ask.

How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?

The container is about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. Pick a flat, solid spot such as a driveway or pavement, leave about 60 feet of clear space for the truck and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines, and move cars and equipment out of the way. Mark the spot if you will not be home. In Archbald and Jermyn every temporary dumpster needs a Borough permit, even on private property, so we check the Borough's rules before booking.

Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?

Yes. Concrete, brick, asphalt and stone are exactly what the 10 is for, because heavy material belongs in a 10 or 15 yard rather than a big box. Spread it evenly and stay within the included weight of about 1 to 2 tons. Tell us roughly how much there is when you book and we help you plan the load.

How long do I get it for?

A standard rental period of up to 7 days, set on your quote. Need more time? Call and we extend it for an additional daily fee. Finished early? Just call and we schedule a prompt pickup, or swap it for a bigger box if the job grew.

How much does a 10 yard dumpster cost?

Dumpster rentals here typically run $350 to $750, depending on the dumpster size, the type of debris, the delivery location and the rental duration. The 10 yard is our smallest size. We do not publish per-size prices: you get one flat-rate quote for your address that includes delivery, pickup and disposal, with no hidden fees. Call (570) 354-0618 for an exact price.
