The 20 yard container in Scranton

When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is often the answer - it is one of our most popular sizes, for residential and light commercial jobs alike, with a strong balance between size and capacity. Kitchen and bathroom renovations, multi-room renovations, whole-home cleanouts, roofing jobs, landscaping projects and light demolition all fit it. It holds about 20 cubic yards, roughly six pickup truck loads or 110 to 130 standard 33-gallon trash bags.

It is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It still fits most residential properties around Scranton, and for a project that makes debris over several days it is often the most efficient choice.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines

Renovations, roofs and whole-home cleanouts

Furniture, boxes and mixed household junk from a whole-home cleanout; drywall, wood, cabinets and flooring from a multi-room renovation; shingles and underlayment off a roof; branches and shrubs from a landscaping job; doors, framing and mixed debris from light demolition - these are 20 yard jobs. Shingles and tile are heavy, so tell us about the roof or the floor and we help you plan the weight.

The public options stop well short of that. The public options are built for household trash, not a job's debris. Scranton's DPW says it picks up household garbage first and larger items "if we have room in the truck", and we found no City drop-off for construction or bulk waste. Dunmore's DPW does not pick up construction debris and its 2026 calendar says clean-outs will not be accepted; Old Forge's curbside service does not take construction material; Dickson City's schedule says no construction materials, and its spring cleanup is one pickup per house; and Mayfield's garbage contract leaves out construction and demolition waste. Loads go to local disposal and recycling facilities in the Scranton area, and materials such as metal, concrete and yard waste are recycled whenever possible.

What the 20 yard includes

Flat-rate pricing that covers delivery and pickup, disposal up to the included weight - typically 3 to 4 tons, depending on the debris - and a standard rental period of up to 7 days. Need it longer? We extend it for an additional daily fee. Tile, plaster, shingles and wet yard waste add up, so plan by weight as well as volume, load evenly and keep everything below the top edge. If your debris is mostly concrete or dirt, a 10 yard is the better option. For added protection on a driveway, you can put plywood or boards under the container's wheels.

Suitability

Is the 20 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 20 yard for

  • Whole-home and multi-room cleanouts
  • Kitchen and bathroom renovations
  • Roofing jobs, with the weight planned first
  • Landscaping and yard debris
  • Light demolition and mixed construction debris

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly concrete, dirt, brick or tile (a 10 handles the weight better)
  • Major construction and demolition - that is a 30 or 40
  • Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length
  • Asbestos, paint, oil, chemicals, tires or batteries

Placing a 20 yard container in Scranton

It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines. The driveway comes first. On a Scranton street, City Code § 400-17 requires a City permit for any roll-off placed on a street or highway; the container needs a flashing light and proper reflectors, and it may stay in the right-of-way for one day only unless the permit holder hires an off-duty police officer to keep traffic moving safely. So the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we arrange the City's street permit or check the rules with you before booking. In Archbald and Jermyn every temporary dumpster needs a Borough permit, even on private property, so we check the Borough's rules before booking. Outside Scranton, Carbondale's permit FAQ says a dumpster needs a City permit "if the dumpster is placed in the road" and that "If the dumpster is on your property, you are not required to have a permit"; Clarks Summit needs a Borough permit for a dumpster in the street, good for two weeks and renewable to six weeks in all, with reflective tape and two-inch lumber under it (Ord. 2015-02 § 104); and Jermyn needs a Borough permit and a bond for a roll-off on a paved Borough road, with a protective barrier under it (Ord. 2 of 1992). Elsewhere we found no posted street-permit rule for a dumpster, which is not proof there is none, so we check with the borough office before a street placement. Pennsylvania's State Highway Law says no one may "open the surface of or occupy a State highway without a permit" (§ 420(b)(2)), and PennDOT handles anything within state highway right-of-way through its highway occupancy permits, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-81, I-476, US-6, US-11, PA-307, PA-347 or any other state route. For added protection, you can put plywood or boards under the wheels. Each town page covers its own rules.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Not covered here? Call (570) 354-0618 and ask.

How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?

About six, or 110 to 130 standard trash bags. Think of it as a whole-home cleanout of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.

Can a 20 yard fit in a Scranton driveway?

In most - it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. Put it on the driveway or a paved area rather than the lawn, and leave about 60 feet of clear space for the truck and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance. On a Scranton street, City Code § 400-17 requires a City permit, a flashing light and reflectors, and limits the stay to one day unless an off-duty officer is hired; for a street spot we arrange the City's street permit or check the rules with you before booking.

What is the typical weight limit on a 20 yard?

Typically 3 to 4 tons, depending on debris type. Shingles, tile, concrete, dirt and wet yard waste are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not. Call and we help you recommend the most cost-effective option for heavy debris.

How long is the rental?

A standard rental period of up to 7 days. If the job runs on, we extend it for an additional daily fee; if it fills early, we can swap it or add another; if you finish early, just call and we schedule a prompt pickup.

Can I get a 20 yard the same day?

Often, depending on availability. Same-day or next-day delivery is available in Scranton and nearby areas - call (570) 354-0618 early in the day for the best chance. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; delivery and pickup windows are set on the call, and we do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
