The 30 yard container in Scranton

The 30 yard takes up the same 22 by 7.5 feet of ground as the 20 - the extra volume is all height. That makes it the natural pick when a job makes a lot of bulky or mixed debris but the site has no more room: multi-room renovations, estate or move-out cleanouts, retail or office remodels, light demolition, or a community or property cleanup. It holds about 30 cubic yards, roughly nine pickup truck loads or 170 to 190 standard 33-gallon trash bags, and fits most residential driveways and commercial job sites.

The walls are about six feet high, so most of what goes in is carried or thrown rather than tipped from a wheelbarrow. Contractors and crews do not mind, and it means fewer hauls on a busy site; a homeowner working alone may prefer a 20 and a swap.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines

Big renovations, estates and job sites

Taking several rooms back to the studs fills a 30 in a hurry: drywall, wood, cabinets, flooring and fixtures. Estate and move-out cleanouts land here too - furniture, mattresses and household items - and so do retail and office remodels with fixtures, displays and partitions, and pallets, packaging and light demolition materials. Sort a few things first: paint, oil, fuel, batteries, tires, appliances containing refrigerants and anything hazardous stay out.

Bigger jobs bring state rules. Pennsylvania's DEP enforces the federal asbestos NESHAP rules, and when a project falls under them "a minimum ten-working-day notification of the project is required to be made to DEP"; DEP adds that it "does not regulate the removal of ACM from private residences unless the residence is an apartment with five or more units". The Department of Labor and Industry separately requires "at least a five-day notification of any project abating friable asbestos material of more than 3 square or 3 linear feet", done by a certified contractor. Asbestos never goes in our roll-offs.

Weight, swaps and long jobs

Typically 4 to 5 tons is included, depending on the debris type. The 30 is built for bulky materials; dense material such as tile or concrete can hit the tonnage before the container is full, so plan by weight and keep debris below the top edge. If your project is mostly concrete, brick or dirt, a 10 or 15 yard is more efficient. The flat rate covers delivery and pickup, disposal within the included weight limit and a standard rental period of up to 7 days. Jobs that run longer go on extensions, swap-outs or scheduled pickups, and contractors get flexible billing options.

Suitability

Is the 30 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 30 yard for

  • Multi-room renovations
  • Estate and move-out cleanouts
  • Retail and office remodels
  • Light demolition and construction materials
  • Community and property cleanups

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly concrete, brick or dirt - a 10 or 15 manages the weight better
  • Paint, fuel, solvents and other hazardous material
  • Batteries and tires
  • Asbestos, or appliances containing refrigerants

Placing a 30 yard container in Scranton

It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines. The driveway comes first. On a Scranton street, City Code § 400-17 requires a City permit for any roll-off placed on a street or highway; the container needs a flashing light and proper reflectors, and it may stay in the right-of-way for one day only unless the permit holder hires an off-duty police officer to keep traffic moving safely. So the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we arrange the City's street permit or check the rules with you before booking. In Archbald and Jermyn every temporary dumpster needs a Borough permit, even on private property, so we check the Borough's rules before booking. Outside Scranton, Carbondale's permit FAQ says a dumpster needs a City permit "if the dumpster is placed in the road" and that "If the dumpster is on your property, you are not required to have a permit"; Clarks Summit needs a Borough permit for a dumpster in the street, good for two weeks and renewable to six weeks in all, with reflective tape and two-inch lumber under it (Ord. 2015-02 § 104); and Jermyn needs a Borough permit and a bond for a roll-off on a paved Borough road, with a protective barrier under it (Ord. 2 of 1992). Elsewhere we found no posted street-permit rule for a dumpster, which is not proof there is none, so we check with the borough office before a street placement. Pennsylvania's State Highway Law says no one may "open the surface of or occupy a State highway without a permit" (§ 420(b)(2)), and PennDOT handles anything within state highway right-of-way through its highway occupancy permits, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-81, I-476, US-6, US-11, PA-307, PA-347 or any other state route. For added protection, you can put plywood or boards under the wheels. Each town page covers its own rules.

30 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Not covered here? Call (570) 354-0618 and ask.

Is a 30 yard too big for a house?

For a regular cleanout, often yes - a 20 handles many whole-home cleanouts. For a multi-room renovation or a large estate cleanout, no - that volume arrives faster than people expect. Tell us the job and we will say which.

Can I do swaps on a 30 yard?

Yes. When it is full we remove it and bring an empty one, and contractors with ongoing work can set up scheduled pickups.

How much weight is included in a 30 yard?

Typically 4 to 5 tons, depending on the debris type. A 30 full of tile or concrete can pass that well before it reaches the top edge, so heavy-only loads should be discussed with us first.

Do I need a permit for a 30 yard?

It depends on where it sits and which place you are in. In Archbald and Jermyn every temporary dumpster needs a Borough permit, even on private property, so we check the Borough's rules before booking. Each town page says what that place asks for.
