The 15 yard container in Scranton

The 15 yard is the middle ground: too much job for a 10, not enough for a 20. Garage, attic and basement cleanouts, kitchen and bathroom remodels, flooring and carpet removal, small deck or fence removal and yard or storm cleanups are the classic fits. It holds about 15 cubic yards, roughly four to five pickup truck loads or 80 to 100 standard 33-gallon trash bags.

At about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide it gives you more room than a 10 without taking over the driveway, and it fits most driveways around Scranton. The lower sidewalls make it easy to load, and it is still small enough to take heavier material, such as concrete or dirt, within the weight limit.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines

Kitchens, floors, decks and yards

A kitchen makes more debris than people expect: by the time the cabinets, the countertops and the drywall are out, a 10 is tight and a 15 is right. Flooring jobs are the same - carpet and laminate are bulky, and tile is dense, so watch the weight. Roofing fits too, but shingles are heavy: ask for weight guidance before loading. Break deck boards, posts and fence sections down so they load flat and save space. Furniture, boxes and household items from a multi-room or estate cleanout go in alongside.

Yard and storm debris fits as well: branches, shrubs and green waste from a seasonal cleanup. Blakely rents its own 6-yard Borough dumpsters to residents for a week at a time, but they take no roof shingles, concrete, appliances, dirt or mulch, cinder blocks, stone, bricks, tires, batteries or electronics. A 15 on the driveway is for the job with roofing, masonry or more than a week of loading in it.

Weight on a 15 yard

Most 15 yard rentals include about 2 to 3 tons, depending on the material. Roofing shingles and tile reach that quickly; cabinets, drywall, carpet and furniture rarely do. If more than half your load is heavy material, call us first, because a 10 yard may save you extra costs. Load evenly and keep everything below the top edge. The flat rate covers delivery and pickup, disposal up to the included weight and a standard rental period of up to 7 days, and we can extend it for an additional daily fee.

Suitability

Is the 15 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 15 yard for

  • Garage, attic and basement cleanouts
  • Kitchen and bathroom remodels
  • Flooring, carpet and tile removal
  • Small deck or fence removal
  • Yard cleanups and storm debris

Pick a different size for

  • Big whole-home cleanouts - go to the 20 or 30
  • Loads that are mostly concrete, tile or dirt (a 10 may cost less)
  • Liquids, paint, chemicals, tires or batteries
  • Asbestos, or appliances containing refrigerants

Placing a 15 yard container in Scranton

It needs a flat, solid spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with about 60 feet of clear space for the truck at delivery and pickup and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance from trees and power lines. The driveway comes first. On a Scranton street, City Code § 400-17 requires a City permit for any roll-off placed on a street or highway; the container needs a flashing light and proper reflectors, and it may stay in the right-of-way for one day only unless the permit holder hires an off-duty police officer to keep traffic moving safely. So the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we arrange the City's street permit or check the rules with you before booking. In Archbald and Jermyn every temporary dumpster needs a Borough permit, even on private property, so we check the Borough's rules before booking. Outside Scranton, Carbondale's permit FAQ says a dumpster needs a City permit "if the dumpster is placed in the road" and that "If the dumpster is on your property, you are not required to have a permit"; Clarks Summit needs a Borough permit for a dumpster in the street, good for two weeks and renewable to six weeks in all, with reflective tape and two-inch lumber under it (Ord. 2015-02 § 104); and Jermyn needs a Borough permit and a bond for a roll-off on a paved Borough road, with a protective barrier under it (Ord. 2 of 1992). Elsewhere we found no posted street-permit rule for a dumpster, which is not proof there is none, so we check with the borough office before a street placement. Pennsylvania's State Highway Law says no one may "open the surface of or occupy a State highway without a permit" (§ 420(b)(2)), and PennDOT handles anything within state highway right-of-way through its highway occupancy permits, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-81, I-476, US-6, US-11, PA-307, PA-347 or any other state route. For added protection, you can put plywood or boards under the wheels. Each town page covers its own rules.

15 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Not covered here? Call (570) 354-0618 and ask.

How big is a 15 yard dumpster?

About 16 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. It holds about 15 cubic yards, roughly four to five pickup truck loads or 80 to 100 trash bags.

Will it fit in my driveway?

Most likely - it fits most residential driveways, and the driveway is where it should go. The truck needs about 60 feet of clear space and at least 25 feet of overhead clearance. The street is the fallback, not the plan: on a Scranton street a City permit is needed, the container needs a flashing light and reflectors, and it may stay one day unless an off-duty officer is hired (City Code § 400-17). For a street spot we arrange the City's street permit or check the rules with you before booking.

Can I keep it longer than the standard period?

Yes. The standard rental period is up to 7 days, and we can extend it for an additional daily fee - just call.

What is the weight limit?

Typically 2 to 3 tons, depending on debris type. Dense materials such as roofing shingles and tile can hit that fast, so call for weight guidance before loading.

Can I mix materials?

Yes, but talk to us first about heavy materials. Anything on our not-allowed list - paint, oil, fuel, chemicals, tires, batteries, propane tanks, asbestos, medical waste and appliances containing refrigerants - stays out.
